Day dreams: Life on paper

Necdet Sen ~ July 2002

6th book: Liars and Alibis

Inside the cover:

Liars and Alibis was written and drawn in February 1991 just after the first Gulf War. I remember that I got a little bit bored when I was drawing this story. If I try to explain simply why I got bored; I've never been a war reporter in my life; I have forced my imagination and reveal my average opinions about war; and I felt that I can't run deep enough during this time.

Readers that are aware about my other stories will understand what I mean. This special feature which is "creating from nothing" may be admirable for some artists, but it's not synchronized with my choices exactly.

By the way, I would like to make clear the subject that creates curiosity: The characters in the stories are really existing? Did I live all those events or nearly observe them?

Usually NO. Just the behaviour is belong to me in all those stories that I wrote and drawn. Events and persons are fiction. I mean, when I talk about situations and portraits from my social habitat, I can make the stories more realistic and I feel a little bit exhausted.

"Who is Mimosa? Is HIZLI myself? Is there anyone called Biricik?" Don't confuse your mind with this kind of questions for futile. They don't... Okey, I confes, they exist... They live in a parallel universe. You can see only their illustrated shadows here. Stories are all fiction. Perhaps some scenes may be happened in my real life. But totally, all heroes that enter to my stories are incarnated on the surface of paper. Whenever a character is sketched, he/she is writing his/her personal story spontaneously.

I am just a narrator, not a creator. Characters live their private life in a different dimension that we can't focus with our confused minds. You may think about artists (and me); all of us are some kind of mediums that look to a selected point fixed and insistent for a long time, and at last, see "others" who are living in flying shadows. All we see and draw on papers are day dreams at real.
